“You have eaten all my leaves,” the bitter-leafed vine cried.
“I was hungry. They weren’t very tasty, though,” said the caterpillar.
“I know. But they were my leaves. I loved them,” the vine lamented.
The caterpillar was silent for a moment. Then, with a quiet sigh, it said, “Oh, I’m very sorry. Your leaves will grow back. Until then, I will leave you a pretty earring.”
And with that, it curled into a glittering chrysalis, hanging like a delicate jewel from one of the vine’s remaining leaves.
